The women eventually extracted themselves from each other, and Laverne turned to him. “Jack, my oh my. I heard she had played out her boots, and now I see why.”

He smiled. “Laverne, it’s such a pleasure. You are more delightful than I could ever have imagined.”

She guffawed with abandon as she pulled him into a hug. He could feel she was wearing no bra.

“Jack, Jack, Jack,” she said as they stepped apart. “Sarah said you were a shameless flirt, but you don’t waste time at all, do you?”

They all laughed together, and Laverne ushered them inside, up a set of wooden stairs and into a large, open landing under a thatched roof. Their host offered them both a drink, and Sarah very quickly followed her into the kitchen to help, leaving him alone in a waft of mixed perfumes and a slew of emotions.

He already knew he would fall for her immediately, for thanks to Sarah’s descriptions and stories, he had indeed felt like he had known her forever. But just watching their faces' delight at seeing each other again was more than enough. Besides, he knew there was no chance of anything happening between the two of them, or the three of them for that matter.

Our relationship was beautiful, but I feel like that spark is gone. Perhaps it is one of those things that are best left in the past. Sarah’s words from the drive-over echoed in his head.

He didn’t mind at all. Of course, he would never say no to a threesome, but he felt equally happy to finally meet the woman who had been such a big part of his partner’s life before he had met her. Again, the compersion flowed through his veins, and he found himself wondering what they were saying in the kitchen as they prepared the drinks. He could always fantasize; besides, Sarah had encouraged him to.

The women came through a few minutes later, all giggles and smiles and ice blocks chinking in glasses. Laverne led them outside onto a wooden deck overlooking an ornately-shaped, black-painted pool.
