The Lasting Legacy of Classic Roman Literature

The influence of ancient Roman literature on modern-day literature is surprising and undeniable, and not just dry, dusty tomes full of ancient scripts. From Shakespeare to J.K. Rowling, the legacy of the classics has left its mark on countless works of literature throughout the ages, and continues to shape the literary landscape of today, from the young adult novels to the bestselling thrillers you read.

One of the most obvious ways in which Roman literature has impacted modern-day literature is through the use of classical themes and motifs. The concept of the hero's journey, for example, can be traced all the way back to the epic poem "The Aeneid" by the Roman poet Virgil. This idea of a protagonist embarking on a transformative journey and facing various challenges along the way has become a staple in modern literature. From J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" to "The Hunger Games" series by Suzanne Collins", the hero's journey has been utilized in countless works of modern fiction. 

Also, the use of humor and wit to ridicule people’s stupidity in literature stems from Roman satirists like Juvenal and Horace. Their influence can be seen in modern satirical works like "Catch-22" by Joseph Heller and "Animal Farm" by George Orwell. Even the simple use of the Latin language has had a lasting impact on literature. In fact, Carpe diem, et cetera, cum laude, curriculum vitae and mea culpa are just a few of the Latin phrases still widely used today.

But perhaps one of the most notable ways in which Roman literature has influenced modern literature is through the works of William Shakespeare, who drew heavily on the themes and characters of Roman literature, particularly Plautus, to create some of his most iconic plays, such as Julius Caesar and Antony and Cleopatra. Shakespeare's use of Roman mythology and its complex themes of betrayal and revenge in his work helped to establish the genre of historical fiction. As such, modern writers like  J.K. Rowling and George R.R. Martin continue to be influenced by his legacy of drawing on classical mythology and Roman history and politics. The themes and motifs of Roman literature, like the complexities of human nature, continue to be relevant and inspiring to writers today, showcasing the enduring legacy of this ancient literary tradition.
